Thirteen-year-old Cynthia was last seen leaving her family's residence in the 1400 block of Warrington in Washtenaw County, Michigan during the morning hours of January 19, 1970. She was on her way to school at Forsythe Junior High School (located in the 1600 block of Newport Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan), but never arrived and has not been seen since.
Cynthia had no prior history of running away from home and was a good student; she was carrying only two or three dollars in cash when she vanished. Cynthia didn't like to ride the bus and she preferred to walk the one-mile route to school.
There were possible sightings of Cynthia in the Ann Arbor area in the days following her disappearance, but none of them were confirmed. Cynthia called her family members on April 1, 1970 and April 2, 1970; she did not know her whereabouts at the time of the two telephone conversations, which were just two hours apart.
On May 5, 1970, Cynthia's relatives received an extortion-type phone call, but there has not been any other communication regarding her case since that time.
Ream was convicted of rape in the 1970s. In 1986, he raped and murdered Cindy Zarzycki, a thirteen-year-old girl who was dating his son. Ream was convicted of Cindy's murder and in 2008, he lead authorities to her body, which was buried on a 24-acre property that he owned 30 miles from Detroit, Michigan. While in prison, Ream reportedly told cellmates that he was a serial killer with four to six victims.
In May of 2018, police began digging at the same property where Cindy had been buried, expecting to find the bodies of other missing girls there, but no human remains were found and the digging stopped after a week.
As of 2018, Cynthia's case remains unsolved.
