On July 22, 1976, twelve-year-old Dorothy and her mom left their home in Ocala, Florida. Her mom took a driving test while Dorothy exchanged a pair of sandals at the J.M. Fields department store. She also planned on buying a birthday present for her brother.
Dorothy returned the shoes and was last seen at the mall at approximately 2:00 p.m., but she never met her mom at the designated location that they agreed on and her mom reported her missing.
Two hours after she was reported missing, witnesses reported seeing a girl matching Dorothy's description at a convenience store called Nuby's (located on the intersection of Highway 40 and State Road Highway 314 which was less than a mile away from the Ocala National Forest) with one or two adult males where they purchased sodas & left. The child was noted to be shaky and very frightened. The child and the male companions were never identified & police aren't sure if the child was in fact Dorothy.
Dorothy is the youngest of five children and she lived with her family in a mobile home in Citra, Florida in 1976. She was an honor student at Marion Middle School, attended church regularly and worked at her parents' barbecue.
Investigators don't believe that Dorothy ran away from home as she was not having any personal problems at the time of her disappearance. There was some speculation that her disappearance might be linked to the 1975 disappearances of Sheila and Katherine Lyon, but there wasn't any evidence connecting the cases that were discovered.
Dorothy's parents divorced in 1981 and her father died ten years later. Her case remains unsolved & she remains missing.
Dorothy is described as having brown hair & blue eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she wore eyeglasses with gold-colored, teardrop-shaped frames. Her upper incisor slightly overlaps her upper front tooth & she was missing one tooth at the time she went missing. She has freckles across her nose & a mole on her knee.
She was last seen wearing a red short-sleeved bodysuit with a blue flower design & snaps at the crotch, a button-up shirt tucked inside blue jeans, a brown leather belt with a metal buckle and lime-green high-top Keds sneakers. Her hair was styled in pigtails and her nicknames are Dee & DeeDee.
