Fifteen-year-old Kelly left a female friend's house at approximately 9:30 to 10:00pm on June 12, 1984 in Lynbrook, New York. She was last seen walking west on Earl Avenue and Merrick Road shortly thereafter.
It was believed that Kelly was headed for Captain Video (a now defunct video parlor) half a mile west of Merrick Road, but she never made it there and has not been seen since.
Kelly lived with her mother, stepfather, siblings and stepsiblings. She rarely saw her biological father. She had a part-time job at a shade & venetian blinds packaging factory at the time of her disappearance.
Authorities don't believe that Kelly left on her own accord. Her clothes she planned on wearing the next day were laid out, she never picked up her last paycheck and left all her money & personal belongings behind.
Kelly disappeared the day she was supposed to take an important final exam in her summer school social studies class. She had been experimenting with alcohol prior to her disappearance, associated with older men and sometimes broke her curfew, but her loved ones said that Kelly was no more rebellious than any other teenager.
On November 10, 1984 (five months after Kelly disappeared), Kelly's friend, Theresa Fusco went missing and her body was found 3 weeks later on December 5th, five blocks from her home.
On March 26, 1985, 19-year-old Jacqueline Martarella went missing after leaving a friend's Oceanside home to go to her job at Burger King. Her body was found on a golf course on April 22nd.
Police believe that Kelly, Theresa and Jacqueline's cases are related: they were all Caucasian teenagers last seen walking alone at night. Theresa and Jacqueline were found nude, sexually assaulted and their bodies found in open fields. The girls' clothing have never been located.
Dennis Halstead, John Restivo and John Kogut were convicted of murdering Theresa, but the DNA on Theresa's body didn't match any of them.
John Kogut (who confessed to the murder) was the only one of the suspects to be tried again after the conviction was overturned and he was acquitted by a judge. At one time, Kelly dated John Kogut and also knew Dennis Halstead & would occasionally visit his apartment with her friends.
Theresa and Jacqueline's murders remain unsolved. Foul play is suspected in Kelly's case and is presumed dead by police & her family.
Kelly's mother resides in Vermont. Her case remains unsolved and police are unsure if her case has anything to do with the murders.
Kelly has pierced ears and a scar on her forehead. She was last seen wearing a pink sleeveless sweatshirt, jeans, white sneakers and a gold chain necklace with a charm.
