Sixteen-year-old Monica Carrasco was last seen at her aunt & uncle's home four miles east of Balmorhea, Texas in the early morning hours of October 2, 2003.
Her two cousins saw Monica go to bed at 11:00 p.m. the night before. They checked on her at 1:30 a.m. where she was asleep in her bed. By 7:30 the next morning, Monica was gone and her Bible had disappeared with her. She has not been seen since.
Extensive searches of the area around Monica's aunt and uncle's home have yielded no clues as to Monica's whereabouts. The terrain is rugged with many rocks, thorns and cactuses which would have been painful to walk in without wearing shoes.
Monica may have left the Balmorhea area to meet someone, possibly an individual that she contacted through the Internet. Her aunt and uncle believe that she may have become disoriented from her medications, left the house and gotten a ride with a passing motorist, possibly on Highway 17 which runs near their home.
In May 2003 (five months before she went missing), a bus driver allegedly harassed Monica. She didn't report the incident, but was so shaken by it, she refused to take the bus to school after that. The bus driver was interviewed and ruled out as a suspect in her disappearance, but Monica's uncle failed a lie detector test in relation to her case.
While Monica apparently left the house of her own accord, police believe that she may be in danger. She became depressed after her father's death from bone cancer in 2000 and was hospitalized for the depression and anorexia nervosa after losing over 50 pounds.
After she was released from the hospital, Monica decided to live with her aunt & uncle because she was angry with her mother, however, her mother says that their relationship problems were not serious and she doesn't believe that Monica ran away.
Monica is described as a Hispanic female with a height of 5'5, weighed between 100-111 pounds, has dark brown hair (which had red streaks in it when she was last seen) and dark brown eyes. She has pierced ears, a chicken pox scar on her forehead near her hairline, a small light-colored mole on her cheek and dimples in both of her cheeks.
She was last seen wearing a long beige or white nightgown. She did not wear any socks or shoes. She is possibly carrying a large white or black Bible.
Monica is supposed to be taking anti-depressant medication, but she does not have it with her. She also suffers from anorexia nervosa and low blood sugar; she was on a strict diet and under a doctor's care at the time of her disappearance.
Monica was a junior at Alpine High School at the time of her disappearance and is described as a very religious person.
